This year, Cycling Nova Scotia, in partnership with the Ecology Action Centre, and supported by Halifax Regional Municipality and the Province of Nova Scotia, hosted our first Bike Summit since the pandemic!

This years Bike Summit was held at Captain William Spry Community Centre (16 Sussex Street, Halifax) on Monday, October 23, from 9am-4:30pm. It was  free event, targeted at active transportation professionals and advocated around Nova Scotia. CBC Information Morning radio show joined us at the Summit- hear more about it on the taped segment.

So much has happened in active transportation around the province the past few years, and we were thrilled to celebrate and share success stories, and hear about barriers and challenges along the way. We heard from a fantastic, knowledgeable list of speakers throughout the day, including a welcome from Councillor Patty Cuttell, staff from Provincial departments playing a role in active transportation, Municipal staff implementing infrastructure projects, First Nation community staff working on active transportation planning projects, and from trail builders, advocates, and volunteers working to build and maintain our province’s beautiful trails.

We also had opportunities for a group ride, nature walk, and networking throughout the day. We had a fantastic group of organizations and businesses who set up tables and brought in demo e-bikes for those at the Summit, and the general public to learn about programming and active transportation work- so a big thank you to those who took part in the fair!

It was an opportunity to make connections with like-minded professionals in the active transportation advocacy, planning, and design space. Our goal was for participants to take away connections, ideas, tools, and opportunities for partnerships going forward, and we’ve been hearing feedback that lots of that took place! These conversations will not end once the Summit is over- it will be a venue to begin and continue on-going conversations and foster work that will roll into the years ahead!

We would also like to thank the Halifax Regional Municipality and their staff for installing six new bike racks at the Captain William Spry Community Centre- you helped us leave a Bike Summit legacy in the community of Spryfield!

We look forward to seeing everyone next year!
